The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a modern industrial park with over 4 million square feet of space. Building 77 is undergoing $140 million of base building improvements for the adaptive reuse of the 18-story, 960,000sq building. The new investment will build out space in Building 77 for tenants, including a motorcycle design startup and a medical diagnostics laboratory.
For this massive project, which involved installing thousands of feet of conduit, E-J Electric Installation Company ordered and installed for the first time Wheatland’s SmartSet™ EMT with built-in coupling product. Kevin Ulmschneider, the project’s foreman, stated that this was his first time using the product and it was great in labor savings. He didn’t have to carry around or handle couplings for the conduit. If it was up to him he commented that he would use the product on all of his projects. Electrical contractors want to use the product but industry engineers still need to be convinced a bit more.
One of the greatest advantages of this product is when you are erecting new buildings. When using this product on risers put the Smart Set EMT bell end facing down. The concrete and water being used to pour the decks runs right off of the bell and it doesn’t get into the couplings, this is a huge advantage in new construction and renovations as well.
