This program was developed for the purpose of estimating the savings possible by choosing to use twenty foot lengths of electrical metallic tubing (EMT) in lieu of ten foot lengths. It is NOT for estimating the cost of installation of a conduit, it is merely for comparison. We recognize that twenty foot lengths are not appropriate for all areas of a project and estimated savings are for only those areas where the longer lengths would be appropriate. Straps and elbows are neglected because they would be the same for each run and would only complicate the calculation. We assumed a 10% labor saving for the 20 foot length for handling and moving the conduit. The balance of the savings is from eliminating the couplings, both material and labor costs. Besides the length, the savings are driven by the type of coupling and the cost of labor. Other factors such as supervision and sales tax are also resultant savings.

Instructions and Help:

Size: There are ten possible sizes for EMT, select from the drop down menu.

Fitting Type: The program is structured to allow the choice of fittings, either steel or die cast; set screw or compression. Selection may be made from the drop down menu.
Runs: The program is set up to do multiple runs such as parallel feeds. The program places two connectors in each run.
Length: The length can be any reasonable number and should be a multiple of ten.
Labor: This is the rate paid for productive labor including burden for taxes and insurance. Labor rates are industry standard rates. Labor to install conduit can vary widely based on installation conditions such as height, skill level and overtime. The units used are VERY aggressive for a large productive contractor in a competitive bid situation. Additional rates are provided for nominal and inefficient conditions.
Labor Effectiveness: Select AGGRESSIVE, AVERAGE or COMPLEX from the drop down menu.
Supervision: A generally accepted industry practice is to estimate one hour of supervision for each ten hours of productive labor. The wage rate is for supervision labor plus burden for taxes and insurance. The rate can be factored up or down to provide additional or reduced supervision. The rate may be set to zero to eliminate supervision from the calculation.
Sales Tax: Sales tax is included on material only. It may be adjusted to any reasonable percentage or eliminated by setting the number to zero.

Finally, this program was developed by electrical contracting professionals with the desire of being as realistic as possible. The goal was to create a tool that accurately illustrates the cost savings of using twenty foot lengths versus ten foot lengths of electrical metallic tubing.
